Scandi style plays part in restaurant boom

Business is booming for London’s restaurants, with a record 179 openings last year, according to the annual survey by Harden’s Guide. Style-wise, the influence of Scandinavia is on the rise, with two venues making the top ten of the Gastronomic Experience list for their cooking.

It’s a trend that’s being replicated across the country, according to Ambience Designs’ Projects Director, Duane Paterson: “Inspired by our northern European neighbours, cooking is increasingly about using fresh, local ingredients in imaginative ways, and this is reflected in the overall look and design of the venues.”

The light wood and clean lines of Scandi style are also associated with environmental awareness, sustainable sourcing and integrity, says Paterson: “We’re being asked to source furniture with a Nordic feel as restaurants increasingly turn to a simpler way of furnishing.”

Working with clients and their designers, Ambience has successfully sourced beautiful, handmade furniture from the UK and across Europe to fit this move towards elegant simplicity and hard-wearing materials.
